Men's basketball team ends Monterey tourney as runner-up

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team played Gavilan tough in the championship game of the Monterey Peninsula Tournament on Saturday afternoon, but couldn't come away with the title.

The Lasers lost to Gavilan, which remained undefeated on the season,

Freshman forward Jake Linsky and sophomore guard Daniel Hernandez were each named to the all-tournament team for IVC.

By winning two of three games, Irvine Valley improved its record to 7-2 overall.

Irvine Valley was tied with Gavilan at the half, 31-31, but the Rams out-scored IVC, 32-24, in the second half.

Sophomore forward Parker Sims paced IVC with 14 points, six rebounds and three assists. Freshman forward Jake Linsky had 11 points and freshman forward Cameron Griffin and sophomore guard Daniel Hernandez each finished with nine points. Griffin also had seven rebounds.

IVC shot just 33.3 percent (19 of 57) as a team from the field in the contest and was out-rebounded, 48-30.

Irvine Valley won its first two games of the tournament, including beating Solano, 61-57, on Friday.

The Lasers had three players score in double figures, led by Linsky with 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists, five steals and four blocks.

Freshman forward Cameron Griffin had 14 points and seven rebounds and Hernandez chipped in 10 points and three assists. Sophomore forward Parker Sims contributed nine points, four rebounds and four steals.

Irvine Valley plays again next Thursday when it opens up play against Glendale in the Don Johnson Classic at Cypress College.
