Irvine Valley’s athlete of the week for Oct. 7 is sophomore women’s volleyball player Alaina Gendale.
She helped lead the Lasers to their 11th straight win last Friday night.
IVC swept Riverside, 25-23, 25-15, 25-19, in an Orange Empire Conference match on the road.
Gendale, a two-year starter for IVC, had 10 kills, hit .320 and added 13 digs in the win.
The 10 kills and 13 digs were both season highs for Gendale.
Irvine Valley improved its record to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in conference.
Gendale ranks second on the Lasers in kills with 88 and third in digs with 90.
She is averaging 2.51 kills and 2.57 digs per set so far this year.
Gendale has at least eight kills in eight of 11 matches.
Gendale helped IVC reach the CCCAA State Championships in both indoor and beach volleyball during the 2018-19 school year.
IVC's indoor team finished with a record of 21-2 overall. Gendale averaged 1.47 kills and 2.49 digs a year ago.
And the Irvine Valley beach team went 17-8 overall (15-1 against community college opponents) and finished third in the final AVCA state ranking.
Gendale reached the final day of the pairs beach state championship event in Chula Vista with teammate Kendall Nolan.
