Men's basketball team gets beat in OT at Santiago Canyon

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team out-scored Santiago Canyon, 6-1, over the final three minutes of regulation to help force overtime before falling in the extra period, 95-91, in an Orange Empire Conference game on the road on Wednesday night.

Irvine Valley trailed, 80-75, with 2:59 left after Santiago Canyon's Troy Recktenwald made two free throws.

The Lasers got two free throws by freshman forward Sadiq Muhammad with 2:14 to play to get within 80-77.

And after a layup by sophomore guard Geoff Salas with 1:24 to play, the Lasers trailed, 80-79.

A layup by freshman forward Bryce Roczey put IVC in front, 81-80, with 51 seconds to go.

IVC had a chance to extend its lead after Santiago Canyon missed a layup. But the Lasers couldn't connect on two free throws after being fouled.

Santiago Canyon's Jordan Holden was fouled with 19 seconds left and made one of two free throws to tie the score at 81.

Muhammad had to put the Lasers in front, but his three-pointer was off the mark with two seconds to go.

The game went to overtime and Santiago Canyon scored the first six points to take control.

The Lasers got as close as three points at 92-89 after a layup by freshman guard Christian Louis. But Santiago Canyon held on.

Irvine Valley was paced by Salas with 24 points and five rebounds. Muhammad finished with 17 points and seven rebounds and Roczey had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Lasers.

Santiago Canyon got 25 points from Tyler Goodlow and 23 points from Paulo Araujo in the win.

Irvine Valley's record slipped to 4-17 overall and 1-4 in conference, while Santiago Canyon improved to 14-6 overall and 3-1 in conference.

Irvine Valley has a bye from conference action on Friday and will host Cypress next Wednesday at 6 p.m.
