Volleyball team takes on Grossmont with trip to state on line

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team plays for a spot in the California Community College Athletics Association State Championship on Saturday night.

The top-seeded Lasers take on No. 8 Grossmont at 6 p.m. in the CCCAA So. Cal. Regional Playoffs at home.

Irvine Valley, which won the Orange Empire Conference and is the only undefeated team remaining in the state, swept conference rival Orange Coast, 25-10, 25-18, 25-21, on Tuesday night in the opening round of the playoffs.

Irvine Valley received 13 kills, 10 digs, four blocks from sophomore outside hitter Olivia Aguilar, 10 kills, seven digs and two aces from sophomore outside hitter Taira Ka'awaloa and eight kills from freshman outside hitter Alyssa Vortouni in the victory.

Sophomore opposite Diamond Brogan chipped in seven kills and five blocks, sophomore libero Gabi Lau had 11 digs and sophomore setter Megan Ramseyer finished with three kills, 10 digs, two blocks, two aces and 31 assists for the Lasers, who earned their third win over Orange Coast on the year.

Irvine Valley is hitting .342 on the season, which ranks second in the state.

Aguilar ranks fifth in the state at 4.59 kills per set. And she is 15th in the state in hitting percentage at .356.

Ka'awaloa ranks 11th in the state in kills per set at 3.96 per set and 23rd in hitting percentage at .334.

And Ramseyer is first in the state in assists at 11.21 per set.

Vortouni averages 1.78 kills per set, Brogan averages 1.46 kills per set and Lau is averaging 2.99 digs per set for IVC.

Grossmont is the No. 8 seed and has a record of 21-6 overall.

The Griffins, who won the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference title for the eighth year in a row this season, took care of No. 9 Saddleback, 25-18, 25-19, 25-19, in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday.

Grossmont hit .380 as a team and was led by Khalia Jordan with 12 kills and 10 digs. Alexcis Morris had nine kills, three blocks and hit .643, while Felicia Marshall ended with six kills and four aces.

Sheay Isbell had 14 assists and Erin Roberts finished with 12 assists for the Griffins.

On the season, Morris averages 2.74 kills and 0.76 blocks per set, Marshall averages 2.45 kills per set, Jordan averages 2.08 kills and 2.11 digs per set and Roberts is averaging 8.12 assists per set for Grossmont.

The winner of the match moves on to the eight-team (four teams from each region) CCCAA State Championship next Saturday and Sunday at Solano College in Fairfield.

IVC last made the state championship event in 2014. In that season, the Lasers went 27-0 and won their first state title.
