Women's volleyball team rallies in one of best wins of season

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team might have dropped a tough first set in an Orange Empire Conference match on Friday night at home to Cypress.

But the Lasers battled back and took the next three sets and won important match, 25-27, 25-21, 25-15, 25-6 over the Chargers.

Irvine Valley moved its record to 3-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

IVC had its chances in the first set with sophomore outside hitter Alya Mersin tying the match at 24 and 25 with kills, but Cypress scored two points in a row to end the set.

Cypress led, 20-18, in the second set, but the Lasers tied it at 20 and then won five of the next six points. 

Mersin had a kill to lift IVC to a 22-20 lead and then freshman middle blocker Samantha Schellenberg recorded a solo block to put the Lasers ahead, 23-20.

Three points later the Chargers hit out and the Lasers had 25-21 win in the set to make it a 1-1 match.

In the third set, Irvine Valley jumped out to a 20-11 lead on a block by freshman middle blocker Jazlynn Fu.

An ace by Mersin made the score, 22-12, and then Fu scored a kill to put Irvine Valley up, 23-14.

The Chargers committed a hitting error two points later to hand the set to IVC, 25-15.

And the fourth set was all about Irvine Valley's Emi Velasco.

The Tustin High freshman's solid serving gave Irvine Valley the first 14 points of the set.

Irvine Valley led, 20-2, after a kill by Fu.

IVC held a 21-3 advantage after another kill by Fu.

Irvine Valley was up, 21-6, and then Cypress gave up points with a lift, a hitting error and then two strikes into the antenna to end the match.

IVC was led by Mersin with 16 kills and seven digs. She hit .387 for the match.

Fu added 15 kills, hit .359 and ended with eight digs and four blocks for the Lasers.

Freshman setter Daiah Rivero contributed six kills, 14 assists and two digs and Schellenberg finished with five blocks and two kills for Irvine Valley.

Irvine Valley plays again against Santa Ana in a conference match next Wednesday at 6 p.m. at home.
