Baseball team continues to roll, defeats Cerro Coso by seven

The Irvine Valley baseball team stayed unbeaten on the 2026 season with another big offensive showing in a 14-7 victory over Cerro Coso on Friday afternoon at home.

It was the third time this year that the Lasers have scored in double digits.

The Lasers have put up 22 runs, 17 runs and now 14 runs in contests.

In the seven-game win streak, IVC has out-scored opponents, 79-23.

Seven of those were by Cerro Coso, including four in the top of the first inning on Friday.

Cayden Johnson hit a three-run home run for the Coyotes as part of the four-run frame.

But Irvine Valley responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to get back into it.

Sophomore designated hitter Jake Amundson hit a two-run double to make it a 4-2 game.

Cerro Coso went back up by four runs (6-2) with two runs in the top of the top of the third.

But it was all Irvine Valley after that.

The Lasers scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead for good and then added three runs in the sixth inning and four more runs in the seventh.

The big blow in the fifth inning was a three-run double by sophomore third baseman Lucas Scott.

Scott put the game away in the seventh with a grand slam Lucas Scott over the left field fence.

The homer put IVC in front, 14-6.

Scott had quite a day, going 2 for 3 with a walk, a run, a double and the grand slam. He finished with an astounding eight RBI on the afternoon.

Freshman catcher Shane Flynn and freshman second baseman Adrian Covarrubias each also had two hits on the day.

Flynn added a double and scored four runs and Covarrubias contributed a RBI.

Freshman first baseman Jacob Ceja walked twice and scored three runs, sophomore designated hitter Jake Amundson chipped in a double and had two RBI and sophomore center fielder Brandon Abernathy also had two RBI for the Lasers.

Freshman right-hander Luke Acuna (2-0) earned the win. He went five innings and allowed six runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.

The big performance on the mound from IVC came from freshman righty Nathan Gentz, who pitched three scoreless innings.

Gentz didn't allow a hit or walk and struck out two batters.

Irvine Valley will host Cerro Coso again on Saturday at noon.
