Baseball team rallies in the eighth, beats Golden West

Irvine Valley's baseball team scored one of its best wins of the season on Tuesday at home.

The Lasers scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and rallied to beat Golden West, 15-11, in the opening game of a three-game Orange Empire Conference series.

IVC trailed, 11-10, heading into the eighth.

And in the bottom of the frame, sophomore third baseman Jake Amundson tied the game at 11-11 with a run-scoring single.

With the bases loaded, freshman second baseman Adrian Covarrubias was hit by a pitch to give the Lasers the lead.

And then sophomore center fielder Brandon Abernathy added to IVC's advantage with a two-run single up the middle.

Irvine Valley capped its scoring with a RBI single by freshman first baseman Jacob Ceja.

Freshman left-hander Luke Acuna came out in the top of the ninth inning and gave up just one walk with two strikeouts to close things out.

Sophomore lefty Sam Tucci earned his first win of the year, going 3.1 innings. He gave up two runs on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Sohomore shortstop Lucas Scott had three hits and four RBI to lead IVC at the plate.

Abernathy went 2 for 4 with two walks and three RBI, sophomore Shane Flynn was 3 for 4 a walk, two runs and one RBI, Covarrubias had two hits and two RBI and freshman Kaden Aimer hit a solo home run.

Irvine Valley's record went to 18-14 overall and 3-10 in conference.

The two teams play again on Thursday at Golden West at 2 p.m.
