Baseball bounces back with 7-4 win over Grossmont Wednesday

Irvine Valley's baseball team bounced back after a tough loss at home to Grossmont on Tuesday with a solid 7-4 win on Wednesday at home.

The Lasers improved their record to 11-2 overall.

The eighth in the state ranked Irvine Valley scored four big runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead for good.

Irvine Valley led, 2-1, through the first six innings, getting an RBI single from sophomore third baseman Lucas Scott in the bottom of the first and then a run-scoring single by Kaiden Aimer in the bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lasers took command for good with those four runs.

A bases loaded walk by freshman catcher Shane Flynn brought in freshman first baseman Jacob Ceja from third to make it a 3-2 game.

Scott then walked again with the bases loaded to put Irvine Valley up by two runs.

And IVC freshman shortstop Mason Gerhardt had the big hit of the inning with a two-run single to give Irvine Valley a 6-2 lead.

Sophomore standout designated hitter Jake Amundson followed in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly RBI to put the Lasers up by five runs.

On the mound, freshman left-hander Luke Acuna started and went 3.2 innings, giving up one run on six hits with two walks and struck out three.

Sophomore righty Andres Hernandez earned his first win of the season, throwing 3.1 innings in relief. He allowed one run on five hits and had two strikeouts.

At the plate, Ceja went 2 for 4 with a run scored, sophomore right fielder Sam Tucci also had two hits with a double and a walk and scored a run and Scott and Gerhardt each drove in two runs.

Irvine Valley is scheduled to play on Friday at College of the Canyons at 2 p.m.

Grossmont fell to 8-6 overall and was led by Noah Libed, who went 4 for 5 with a double and one RBI and Owen Rogers, who hit a two-run home run and finished with two hits and two RBI.
