Men's basketball team set to take on No. 13 Santiago Canyon

Irvine Valley's men's basketball team is back in action on Wednesday night in a key Orange Empire Conference match-up.

The Lasers take on No. 13 in the state Santiago Canyon at 5 p.m. at home.

Santiago Canyon enters the contest with a record of 13-3 overall and 2-0 in the Orange Empire Conference.

The Hawks defeated Santa Ana, 104-93, last Wednesday on the road.

SCC handed the Dons their first loss of the season.

And then on Friday, Santiago Canyon defeated Cypress at home, 68-57.

The Hawks trailed, 32-31, but out-scored the Chargers, 37-25, in the second half.

Santiago Canyon had three players score in double figures with Matt Mendias leading the way with 18 points off the bench. Jacob De Armas added 14 points and seven rebounds and Salim Semaan contributed 13 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.     

On the season, De Armas is averaging 15.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.4 steals per game and Semaan is at 13.0 points and 6.1 rebounds.

Ryan Weber is averaging 10.9 points and5.8 rebounds and Domic Bolton is chipping in 9.9 points per game for SCC.

Irvine Valley enters Wednesday's contest with a mark of 12-4 overall and 2-0 in the OEC.

The Lasers have won five of their last seven contests and captured two close games to start conference last week.

IVC defeated Cypress, 59-57, last Wednesday at home on a game-winning layup by freshman point guard Santos Cordero.

IVC then went on the road and took down Saddleback, 67-65, in a district rival contest.

Cordero hit two free throws with three seconds left to help give the Lasers the win.

In that game, sophomore all-conference post player Matt Mowers finished with 13 points and four rebounds, sophomore wing Nate Tuttle added 12 points and sophomore guard Yanis Aldeguer contributed 11 points.

On the year, Mowers is averaging 15.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.

Freshman wing Ahmad Alhammouri is averaging 12.3 points and 3.7 rebounds and Aldeguer is posting 9.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game for IVC.

The Lasers next play at Riverside on Friday on Friday at 5 p.m. and then are at Orange Coast next Wednesday at 5 p.m.
