No. 8 women's basketball team dominates at San Diego Mesa

Irvine Valley, which made a huge jump up to No. 8 in the latest state poll, went on the road and beat No. 20 San Diego Mesa, 57-40, on the road Wednesday. Mesa had just defeated OCC last week. IVC moves to 11-1 overall.

The Lasers had four players score in double figures, led by sophomore wing Kivonni Williams with 18 points and six rebounds.

Sophomores Symantha Barnett and Alexis Price each recorded double-doubles.

Barnett had 11 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and three blocks and Price added 12 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, three steals and three blocks.

The final player for IVC in double figure scoring was freshman guard Lexy Gallegos with 10 points.

She also had three assists.

Irvine Valley led, 24-19, at the half, and then out-scored San Diego Mesa, 33-21, in the final 20 minutes.

The best part of IVC's game was on the defensive end where it limited the Olympians to just 24.2 percent (15 of 62) from the field as a team in the contest.

Mesa (7-6 overall) had upset No. 2 in the state Orange Coast, 72-66, on Dec. 12.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday night, taking on Rio Hondo in the Glendale Tournament at 5 p.m.

The Lasers then play against host Glendale on Saturday at 5 p.m.
