Women's basketball team goes to 12-1 overall, beats Rio by 30

Sophomore wing standout Kivonni Williams had another in a string of great performances, sophomore forward Alexis Price provided a double-double and the Irvine Valley women's basketball team closed things down in the fourth quarter in a 60-30 victory over Rio Hondo in its opening game in the Glendale Holiday Crossover Tournament on Friday night.

It was IVC's 12th win on the year and moved its record to 12-1 overall.

The Lasers have won eight contests in a row.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 8 in the state, plays again in the event on Saturday against host and No. 14 in the state Glendale at 5 p.m.

The Lasers started slow on Friday and were down, 11-9, after the first quarter, but picked it up from there.

IVC out-scored Rio Hondo, 19-4, in the second quarter to take a 28-15 advantage into the half.

It was a 40-35 lead for the Lasers heading into the final period, and the Lasers put the win away over the final 10 minutes, scoring 20 points and allowing the Roadrunners just five.

Irvine Valley was paced in the win by Williams with 22 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Price added 13 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and two steals and sophomore guard Symantha Barnett contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

IVC put in a great team-effort on the defensive end, limiting Rio Hondo to just 22.2 percent (12 of 54) as a team shooting from the field.

The Lasers also had 45 rebounds to 29 for the Roadrunners.

Brooklyn Romero led Rio Hondo with 11 points.
