Women's basketball sits at No. 11 in the state, ready for OCC

The Irvine Valley's women's basketball team came in at No. 11 in the latest California Community College Women's Basketball Association poll on Monday afternoon.

The Lasers have a record of 16-3 overall under the guidance of second-year head coach Claire Gocke.

Irvine Valley is set to take on No. 9 in the state Orange Coast in a key contest on Wednesday on the road.

While Mt. San Antonio keeps on trucking along as the #1 team in this week's California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCWBCA) State Top 25, a number of teams moved up and down with three new teams joining.

The Big 8 Conference is well represented on the top 10 with three teams including No. 2 Folsom Lake, No. 6 Santa Rosa and No. 7 San Joaquin Delta, and the only team to have beat the top-rated Mounties this season.

The trio of newbies are No. 21 Lemoore, No. 22 Victor Valley and No. 24 Skyline. 

At No. 5, MiraCosta remains the last of the undefeated at 19-0, while No. 10 Copper Mountain is finally earning some more respect with just one defeat on the season like Mt. SAC and Folsom Lake.

Fifteen teams or 60 percent of the ranked teams are from the South Region. 

Conference leaders are No. 4 Laney and unranked Merritt tied for the Bay Valley lead at 5-0 each, Folsom Lake at 7-0 to top the Big 8, No. 18 Fresno City and Lemoore at 3-0 to lead the Central Valley.

Skyline at 3-0 in front of the Coast North, unranked Hartnell 3-0 to lead the Coast South, No. 12 Butte 2-0 to gain the early lead in the Golden Valley.

No. 14 Mt. San Jacinto is 6-0 to top the Inland Empire, No. 15 Saddleback is 4-0 in front of the Orange Empire pack, No. 19 Palomar 4-0 ahead of two 3-0 teams to pace the Pacific Coast Athletic.

No. 3 Moorpark at 4-0 tops the Western State North and No. 13 Glendale tied with unranked LA Valley at 4-0 out in front in the Western State South.

The South Coast Conference will finally begin North and South Division play this week.
